Our elderly friend was just given the 05 Rancher from his elderly brother in law. Super clean, 214 miles, the fuel stinks like it has turned to varnish. It hasn't been registered or ridden in 4 years.

The fuel shut off turns fine and I don't feel any resistance while turning the knob. The carb appeared drained and dry.

I took the fuel line off of the carburetor I tried to drain the fuel and I was unable to get the tank to drain. I attempted to suck the fuel out and also tried to blow into the vent on the fuel cap (pressurize the tank) and still no draining.

I'm thinking that either the shut off valve is clogged or the fuel filter is clogged or a combination.

Any ideas??? Is the filter in the tank and difficult to change??

Would letting a product like SeaFoam soak the filter for a few days and then attempt draining the tank work.

Thanks, Neal

sea foam wont help, remove the tank , remove the petcock from the tank, clean it that way. no fuel filter on them to speak of, but they do have a screen on the inside/upper part of the petcock when you unbolt if from the tank, and drop it down out of the hole.

Hi Friends,
So I finally had time to pull the tank and the cause of the fuel not flowing is a gummed up petcock as we speak I'm soaking the valve in parts cleaner. So we'll see if it helps but I thinking that I'll need to replace the petcock. I cannot tear down the petcock as it appears to be riveted. Any thoughts? Will the parts cleaner ruin an o ring inside the petcock?

Thanks,
Neal

Hi Again,

It appears that whatever filter/screen that was connected to the petcock inside the tank has almost completely disintegrated and as I clean the tank bits and pieces are flushing out.

Would it be acceptable to use the existing petcock and put a fuel filter between the gas tank and carburetor?

I would buy an OEM replacement petcock and screen. I would also use a carboy brush (~25” long) and hot soapy water to scrub out all the garbage. Use a powerful flashlight to make sure it’s clean and dry. You can use a hairdryer to gurry up the drying but be careful that there’s no fuel odor and not too hot (you’ll deform the tank)

Youll probably also want a shindy 03-053 carb rebuild kit

Yes. I have a couple of machines set up this way.

Works fine. No need to waste $50+ om a new petcock if you got the clog out.

you can buy just the filter, no need to buy the whole petcock just to get the filter that slides down into it.

Hey Folks,

A quick update and a word of thanks.

First off......I washed the tank out several times and dried it, Fueled it up and started the quad and it ran like garbage. This morning I cleaned the carb drained all the fuel and put another couple of gallons in and the quad purrs like a kitten. I'll follow up with tune-up and oil changes in the near future. I want to run a few gallons of gas through it and see what ends up in the inline fuel filter. Then I'll replace the petcock filter.

Secondly.... I want to tell you what your advise and help means. My Elderly friend who got this ATV was the neighborhood leader, he plowed for everyone ( he owns 2 plow trucks) and was the neighborhood helper he would be the first one pitching to help out. We live in the Sierra mountains (think northern Yosemite) so our winters can be harsh. (I'm from Buffalo and was stationed in South Dakota so I say harsh tongue in cheek) Over the past 5 years, Gary has been suffering from some significant health issues and cannot move around w/o a walker and he has lost a lot of independence. My wife and I would have to shovel/plow, grocery shop, bring out their garbage cans or put 5-gallon water jugs in their dispenser with a host of other things to help them live independently. Gary will never ride this ATV or plow snow with it. It's solely so when we go to his house to help them we are using "his stuff". It gives him a feeling of independence that he really needs. I WISH ALL OF YOU COULD HAVE SEEN HIS FACE WHEN I DROVE THE ATV UP HIS DRIVEWAY. THANKYOU for all the help. I'm not the greatest mechanic but I love turning a wench and with your help, I looked like a stud today. Give yourselves a pat on the back and if we lived close to one another beers would be on me.

Thanks,
Neal

Very nice! I figured you were doing this as a favor—thot the petcock was bad—thanks for doing this for him.
so it would be good to set it up with a trickle charger and run it once a month. Non-ethanol premium with a shot of seafoam.
Ellsworth? Lol!

That's a great story and brought tears to my eyes. You are an angel for helping Gary and his wife. If beers were being bought they would be on me for you and your wife. :)
