I'm looking to buy a like new 05 AT rancher but it has a whine in the transmission, very pronounced when you slow down. I have owned many honda ranchers but none with the AT. Is this normal or could there be a problem. It has only 430 miles and the price is right. (Was owned by an older gentleman who passed away 2 years ago.) Any thing you can tell me would be helpful. Thanks very much.

I'm not that familiar with the Honda auto trannys(Hondamatic), but I know that if the tranny goes bad, the tranny itself can't be repaired and it has to be replaced as an assembly and it is pretty expensive. I prefer the foot shift models because of this.

I own an auto and it doesn't wine. Why do you think it might be in the tranny? How does it shift? Usually a whine that increases with speed usually means a bad bearing. If the price is right and you have some skill it may be worth it. Also check the oil pressure. Maybe he ran it low on oil and damaged the motor.
