Seems obvious but sometimes I miss the obvious. Just for fun, try adding higher octane fuel or octane booster. I know it costs for each tank but you don't even have to open your toolbox. I agree you would have to "think about a higher compression piston and a cam as well" and such to get real results.
At least you will get a bit of fun charge out of it when you want it.
