2005 Rancher 350 upgrade

Been a member for a few years, but haven't posted in a while. My 2005 Rancher 2wd is bone stock. I've used it for hunting for a few years, but not much else. It's still got the original tires in good shape, but starting to crack from dry rot.

My cousin has bought a quad, so I've got somebody to ride with again. I'd like to do a little work on my Rancher, like free flowing exhaust, jetting, air filter, etc. I'll replace the tires soon, and would appreciate advice for a good budget exhaust and jetting recommendations. I live in southern NC if that helps with jetting changes. Thanks in advance!

An aftermarket exhaust and air filter change won't change the performance much if at all, in fact performance can suffer in many cases. Carb jetting changes won't be necessary at all. Its not until several other major changes are made that combined, add to the whole, that you'll have to rejet your carb. Keeping up with proper maintenance is where you'll find the most value... or most bang for your bucks.
That's kinda what I figured, but couldn't hurt to ask. My cousin bought a new 450 Sportsman, and it's HUGE! My old Rancher is shorter, lighter, and narrower. Our trails were made by my Rancher and his old 300 Fourtrax, and the Sportsman is too big to navigate them yet. It's going to take further trail cutting to make it fit. I guess modern technology isn't always best....

Your on you're own with jetting, but make sure you use genuine Keihin jets.

For the exhaust there isn't too many out there, HMF Performance is cheap and makes good power but is LOUD. Supertrapp may have something also? Then do a UNI or TwinAir filter. The combo should be good for a few extra HP. I'd think about a higher compression piston and a cam as well. You'll notice the difference in the seat of your pants but it's not going to be a 450 sportsman, which I think is really 500cc?
It is 500cc, and the old 400 was actually a 450. Don't understand the reason for this.
I'll probably leave my Rancher alone. It's lasted 12 years for a reason, and I want it to last many more!

Yep they are some tough SOB's, every bit as good as the old 300's as far as I'm concerned. 8700 hard miles on my 2001.
Don't know how many miles are on my 2005. It's a base model with foot shift(the way I like)and no speedo/odo. I bought it from the original owner in 2009, and it looked new. Paid $1800 for it then, and believe I could get my money back out of it now. It's found a home with me though.
Are you looking to change tires as well? I can recommend a radial tire if you are. Smoother riding and higher load rating, doesn't get flat sports, sure they cost more but you'll be very happy with them if you get a set.
I'm planning on replacing the tires soon. The 489's on it have been great all around tires, and I'm considering going with them again. I'm open to recommendations though.
I've also looked at Kenda Bear Claws. Considering my Ranchers 2WD, I don't ride in deep mud, so don't need anything aggressive.
