Hello I have a rancher 350, 2005 model that came in with a complaint of Not ESing in reverse, but manual shift perfect.
Long story short, just needed the reverse cable adjusted, boom fixed!

The other issue and this one is confusing... Is there is no gear indicator. None, not even the famous "-" mark. There is literally NO activity in the top left corner of the combo meter. The meter is not burned up, everything else is perfect. Speed, time, miles/hrs. The screen is perfect. No burnt pixels or anything. Its almost like the meter is the wrong one from the factory, but customer said it was all original. Like its not even supported.

Just some obvious points here:
There is nothing wrong with the ES system. The gear position switch works (it knows where its at, or else the N and R light would not work, plus the ES would not work neither).
The angle sensor was replaced (OEM) before customer brought to me
Speed sensor works as should, and is accurate.
What I am getting at is, Yes... The TV is plugged in!

This ATV only has 60 miles on it since 2005, its in perfect condition. Always cleaned and shined up, dried off and put indoors after every ride. (Old man owned).

I will upload a picture of the dash of this ATV, and one of a "normal" same atv.
Weird!

Hard to isolate the display unit–maybe contacts a little dirty. I would start cleaning every connector on the shift system–use a bit of contact cleaner and a clean plumbers flux brush to wipe any corrosion from connectors. Then follow up with some permatex dielectric grease on each as well using a second clean flux brush.

Thin coat of lube will also help the connectors seat and unseat (click) better—sometimes you don’t get them down tight.

Otherwise i can only suggest to swap in another to see if the gear display circuit is dead. How’s the battery—new?

It looks like the display has been replaced with new. It doesn't even fit the opening in the cover. I'm not believing the 59 miles in 14 years story either. Best guess is that the display was replaced with an alternate part number, possibly because the correct part number was back ordered and not available at the time. Take it off and flip it over there should be numbers on the bottom.

I have two Ranchers wtthe same problem. Both are 2005 machines and the battery was dead so when I replaced it the display quit working. Mechanic told me to flash the battery positive side. Didn’t work.
How did you fix yours?
