Hopped on my quad today like any other day rode for a bit with no problems never had problems but just an oil leek due to no cover. I let my little buddy ride a bit then after I get back on 10 minutes later I’m riding in 3rd shift down shift to 2nd than 1st an when I’m in first my quad shuts off and white smoke starts coming from the top of the engine for a few seconds my quad is cranking now but won’t start any ideas what could be the problem?

Any idea of where all you little buddy went on his ride? Any crazy mud holes, or down a bumpy hill or anything of the sort? This information will help us think more particular.

He was right in front of me in a pretty flat field I was teaching him how to do dounuts he reved a little to much in first gear but nothing to crazy

Welcome to the forum. Just for clarification, this is a TRX400FA or TRX400FGA, correct? (RancherAT)

When you say white smoke off the top of the engine, like coming from the cylinder head? Won't start up at all now?

Didnt overheat it did you? The Cylinder head will get really hot & bake w/e is on top of it. As for shutting down, 1st thing i would check is the oil level. Just some ideas...

Yes it won’t start back up it’s just cranking

I checked the oil an It was very low also I’m not to familiar with atvs but I’m trying to learn I think it did over heat I’m not sure when I was slowing down to first I heard a pop when in the engine then it shut off then started smokin a bit

Ahh so this is a 400ex. Sport quad. Now that i see your profile picture. What cover is missing that was leaking oil?

I think it was a gasket cover but I got it fixed I think the the no oil issue was a big factor in why something blew just don’t know what exactly

Yeah no oil will toast the topend quick. Probably blew a head gasket. From the sounds of it. That would make a pop and make it not start and smoke from between the head and the jug on the topend.

No problem! To have it fixed at a shop yes. We are a DIY forum though so we dont know the labor rates of most places. Can you take a picture of where the smoke came out of? I can tell you if its from the head gasket or not. You would want to do a compression test to confirm its that.

Yap, if you blew the head gasket, you may not have enough compression anymore to get it started.

White Smoke was coming out the top area
