2005 Honda Recon 250 ES idles and revs fine but dies immediately when given throttle in first gear

It’s the weirdest thing. It idles and revs fine, but the second you shift it into first it dies when given gas. It can’t be carburetor because it revs fine right? I’m leaning towards something electrical because of that. Battery is new.

You might try to use the choke when you give it some throttle while in gear and see if that improves it. If it does that indicates a fuel/air issue. If it doesn't help at all it might be an ignition problem. In that case a new NGK spark plug might be the starting point for diagnosis.

Are the carburetor and all ignition parts still OEM Honda originals?

What were the events that led up to this condition?

It’s got a brand new spark plug so I’m not sure.
Did you try the choke while accelerating in gear? Trying to help you determine whether its a carb/fuel/air issue or an ignition issue.
