Hi,

Just bought a used 04 Ruby. I noticed that the fan does not seem to come on at all. On another Ruby I had it seemed to come on fairly regularly. I also noticed on this one that if I turn the key to the on position with the engine off the oil/temp light does not come on. Even for a few seconds. Pretty sure it use to on my old one. Can anyone confirm it should by turning key to the on position? I checked fuses and they all look good. Could it just be the bulb? Where is the wire/sensor to the engine for the temp that tells the fan to turn on?

Thanks for the replies fellas.

sounds like your oil temp sensor could be bad..it should be on the left hand side..right behind the foot rest..one single wire to it. as for your fan..unhook it from the wire harness..and hook it up to a good battery..see if it runs ?.if so..then you could have a bad oil temp sensor or blown fan fuse..while you got the fan unplugged..ground the wire that goes to your oil temp sensor to the motor..or any bolt that it can reach..then..with a volt meter..check the fan leads going to your fan..see if your getting power ?..if you are..then your oil temp sensor is sure enough bad.

On the Rubicon, I believe the oil temp sensor is located on the front cover, down near the bottom on the right side.

So here is what I found out. Grounded the oil temp sensor wire- no fan. So I disconnected the coolant temp sensor at the thermostat and grounded it. Bingo the fan shoots on. So does the OIL pressure/temp light. What I found out is the fan control unit also controls the temp sensor/oil light. So long story short I installed a toggle switch and mounted it nicely upfront by the handle bars. I can now turn the fan on anytime I want. The down side is when I do the temp sensor/oil light comes on at the same time. Oh well I would prefer to have the fan running than no fan. I ran it all weekend turning it on every now and then with no issue.

If you grounded the wire that plugs into the coolant temp sensor and the fan came on, that means the coolant temp sensor is bad.

If you want the fan to run off a toggle switch, but you don't want the temp light to stay on, just splice into the ground (green) wire right before it enters the fan motor and run the wire to one side of a toggle switch. Run the other side of the toggle switch to a good ground on the engine or frame. The fan his power to it all the time with the key on. The control unit switches the fan on with the ground.
