I have a 2004 Honda 450 Foreman and it has been sitting in the garage for a year or so. I start it up every couple weeks and let it idle. I siphoned out the old gas which treated with stabill. I replaced with fresh gas treated with Seafoam. It starts up and idles fine. I started on a little ride yesterday and when I go about a mile it just dies and when you do get it started back up it doesn't want to take throttle and backfires. Took 30 mins to get back home. What do you guys think is wrong? Carb need taken off and give a good cleaning? The gas I pumped out of it looked like varnish.

Yes, but to start I would pull the screw out of the carb bowl let some fresh gas flow thru, try it again and if problem persists pull carb and clean extremely well. You have added fresh gas but there can be old stale fuel in the bowl or even some water.

if your fuel system is all good(good fuel clean carb) and its still doing this, my guess is its your CDI

when my CDI went, it did this, I spend weeks screwing with fuel /carb / rebuilt carb, and even sent atv to dealer ship, as I couldn;t figure things out and got frustrated, then they had it for 3 weeks, re doing all things I did
, gave it back to me NOT fixed, and then ended up going back to dealer, where they swapped in a aftermarket CDI( charged me for a OEM one) it ran great, seemed like issue resoplved
a few weeks later same issue started, back firing not running , or running badly
bought a OEM CDI and been running like champ ever since??
my original cdi lasted me 14 yrs?
then died?

SO< if all fuel things are ruled out, my guess again is its your CDI!
I also found running NON ethanol fuel, I never get back fires, but all the guys that run ethanol get them from time to time on de acceleration ?
so I do think ethanol does cause SOME back fires from time to time?

My 4-wheeler idles perfect but now when in a pull up hill and you gas it wide open it sputters and misses and backfires. I cleaned carb and put in a new rebuild kit. So what do you guys think is causing the sputtering and backfire issue?

The jets are still dirty or if you replaced the jets they may be too small.

I put a Moose brand aftermarket rebuild kit in it. The part numbers on the jets were the same. Idle is perfect, just cuts out and sputters when you put it under a pull like up a hill or if you run over half throttle on level ground. Doesn't do that all the time on level ground. I appreciate any and all help trying to figure this out.

Moose = cheap china knockoff parts. Ya gotta put all of your OEM brass parts back in the carb to fix it. Hang on to your original float valve too... you'll be putting that back in there soon.

We really oughta make a sticky someday to warn everyone about cheap china garbage parts!!! That factor is the single biggest problem we have to identify here, before any one of us members can help someone fix their own Honda ATV. We waste more of our time discovering, advising, and waiting on folks to correct prior china knockoff carb kit and electronic module replacement mistakes, than anything else we ever need to do for them. I think a fair warning notice should be included in a Welcome email, don't you...?

I personally think everyone know's already CHEAP anything tends to mean BAD
humans are just cheap nature d more often than not, and they cannot resist cheap prices that lure them into buying them!

they like to gamble so to speak thinking THEY WILL WIN!
and out smart a OEM maker!
and even worse SOME folks do win, making the lure even more enticing!
folks need to remember CHEAP is more times than NOT JUNK
far too many folks look at UP front costs, and not long term costs
a OEM part will last MOST folks 10-20 yrs
an example this atv is what 12 yrs old
if an OEM "X" 100 bucks that's less than 10 bucks a yr, sounds better if you look at things this way
but few do
they see that CHEAP price tag and just say GREAT and buy it, fingers crossed gambling it WILL work!

not that OEM parts are NOT over priced, most are
but again, long term viewing helps swallow the costs IMO, not to mention you KNOW Its the right part and will LAST yrs and yrs?
buy once cry once? or at least not cry again for yrs LOL

Yep, I agree @mrbb, but I'll rant on a whole lot more! Humans ain't very smart critters... and getting dumber every minute. I'd better cease-fire right here though, else @fuse may feel like I'm singling him out or picking on him. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone though... I'm just frustrated. That made me reflect on this problem and realize how much time we waste here cleaning up after china garbage decisions. Those people that buy china crap NEVER fix anything.

hey I fully agree with you on generations of folks getting BOTH smarter and DUMBER at the same time, relying way too much on tech to learn how to do so many simple things we older folks actually Learned HOW to do

I have said this before, smart phones and like things are just making folks dumber and dumber! IMO
way less skills on hands on doing stuff!

Hey Shade, I thought you recommended Moose kits or some other aftermarket brand? I've never trusted the jets in aftermarket kits but 'whoever" it was changed my mind on Moose brand carb kits.

We have all railed against china garbage. My point is that we can become responsible for solving this problem and we can do a lot more to help people, both before and after the fact. Many of them become victims soon after they join our forums. When that happens in a thread that I am contributing in, it is all my fault... and in threads you contribute, it is yours. Harsh warnings buried in last weeks threads isn't responsible or effective.
