please help. i have a 2003 honda foreman 450 ES 4x4 and im having reverse problems. the electric shift works fine up shifting in the 5 forward gears but when i try reverse its totally dead. now it works only like 10% of the time and i def. need reverse! i have to use the red button on the brake cable to engage reverse along with the elecrtic shift button. now it worked fine all summer and most of the winter until about a month ago i started having problems. it seems to work fine everytime in my heated garage and then as soon as i take it outside to plow it starts acting up. Like today it was acting up outside and then i pulled it into my garage and it wouldn't work at all and then i let it sit for about an hour and tried it in the garage and it worked fine everytime! so im not sure if its a loose wire or sensor or the es control module. PLEASE HELP !!! because my local honda dealer cant even find whats wrong and i had it to them 3 different times !!!

On the back of the motor there should be a sensor with 1 wire going to it. Check that wire and make sure its making good contact.

RE:

i checked the electric shift control module with the up and down arrows and that has to be good because when i up shift from 1 - 5 then i have to down shift and the down arrow works to downshift. So it has to be another electrical problem somewhere. Before when it worked, when i hit the down arrow for reverse it would click but now its totally dead with nothing at all. Any suggestions or further help please? maybe something with the transmission or engine wiring?

same problem the other day

i had the same thing happen to me just the other day. the only thing i could think was the problem was possibly the motor and motor oil was too warm because like u said i let it set for a hour or so and then it started to work again. i have also had a problem some times downshifting gears however i can shut the atv off in gear and then i am able to downshift. i love my honda but i wont ever buy an ES ever again. i am not too impressed or happy with it.
