I want to buy a decent four-wheeler for going riding, mudding, etc.

Some guy has a 2003 Honda Foreman 450cc, 4x4 shaft driven...not the best cosmetic condition, some peeling of decals and stuff...it is snorkeled out though. Not sure if these means its been bogged out before or not though. He said it also needs a new battery. Tires seemed decent still. It also has the electronic display of speedometer and gears and everything, but I'm not sure if it worked or not the screen seemed kinda weird looking, maybe it looks better when its on.

He also threw a home-made wooden back seat on the back rack for a second passenger, meaning he probably rode the back suspension hard with the extra weight.

He's asking $2500 OBO but that seems way too high, even though it is a nice ATV that i've heard never break. But I was thinking offering like $1500-1700 on it maybe, since he's moving in two days, its not in perfect shape, and the economy isn't too good...any opinions? I wanna be able to resell it in a year and maybe make some money off it when I make it a little better cosmetically.

I think you're in the ball park. Some people may want a snorkel, but for me it would reduce the price of the machine. As long as the wooden seat can be removed and caused no damage then that's no big deal.

Without seeing pictures it's hard to say, but you can assume if it's got a snorkel then it's been in mud/water.

I sold a 2004 in really nice condition this spring for $3000, but it was in really clean condition, and I had purchased it for $2600 last fall.

Post up some pictures if you can get them and lets have a look.

It's a manual shift I believe (because of the shifter pedal on the left side), but it has the 4x4 / 2x4 electric selection...I'll try to get up some pics of it tonight

depending on what area you live in i would check craigslist and other ad's to see what they're going for. i would say make the offer considering the kind of position he's in but any other time, i personally wouldnt. i just sold a 97 honda trx 300 here in north idaho for $2100, honda's seem to go over retail up here. dont know why but kinda works out nice. i would definitly look into the differentials on the machine and make sure that those are sound. although its only 7 years old. IMO 7 years of constant mudbogging will DRASTICALLY take down the life of the machine

I just sold a 2003 450 Foreman ES that had 2000 miles on it in decent condtion and it needed alot of brake work but ran good and looked decent and I sold it for $1800 about 3 months ago here in kentucky! It was the yellow one in the pic.
