I am looking at buying a 02 TRX 250 Ex. The seller says it doesn’t have compression. My question is how tough are the engines?
I have read a lot of posts that state the engines are bulletproof. Over all the quad is in very good shape but does not run. How long do rings last on the piston? The quad seems to have little use I am heading over there tonight to do a compression test both wet and dry to try and get a better idea.

For it to have no compression as you stated in the first post. You would have to have a hole in a piston from jumped time, a bent valve, or something worse then rings. Your piston with no rings at all would still have a tiny bit of compression. To have zero your in for a surprise when you pull it apart. Welcome to the forums!

Rings are a most likely scenerio. 175 is a solid deal. Does it have a title? If not i suggest calling your local sheriffs office and run the vin. If the vin is altered in anyway that is a huge red flag. Turn and run! Also check to see if it has thrown a chain and cracked the engine case. My .02

I just had a 250 utility that sat forever that we just got running. Don't have a compression gage, but it was very low when we got it. So what we did was dumped a small amount of 2 cycle oil in the spark plug hole, and turned it over by hand a bunch to disperse the oil. Still almost no noticeable compress. Then after we got the fuel system revived, hooked up jumper cables.... took quite a few turns, but she finally fired up. We let it warm up slowly, took it for some easy rides, and walla, has great compression. Starts on the first kick every time now.

Not saying yours is in the same situation, but figured I'd share.

Took it all apart. The piston was pretty gouged. The cylinder not so bad. I ordered a ball hone to see if I can clean it up a bit. I went with a 3 inch 320 grit. Just trying to put the cross marks back in it.
Everything should be here Wednesday

After thinking about it. And doing some research. The air box lid wasn’t sealed. The air filter wasn’t attached to the carb. The gouges/scoring were /are on the intake side of the piston. The air box and top of the motor had about an inch of dried mud on top. I’m pretty sure that dirt was sucked into the engine. But I will send pics tomorrow

It’s still asking for a URL
You're clicking the image symbol (which is for image url's). Just up and to the left of that is the paperclip symbol. Use that to attach images.

Good lord!!! That piston is in terrible shape. I dont know how well the cylinder walls are gunna just hone out if the piston looks like that.
