This has been a good atv replaced some normal things that wear. But a couple of weeks ago while riding it stopped shifting so I shut it off and within about fifteen minutes the battery went dead started checking things and found that if I unplugged the voltage regulator the battery drain stopped checked the alternator wires everything seems fine so I replaced the regulator everything is working fine now but the new regulator gets so hot that it will burn you if you touch it in sure this is not normal and is going to burn this one up I have checked the wiring according to the manual and the battery but can't find what's causing this issue everything seems fine has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions I know the new regulator is not gonna last long getting that hot I have to be overlooking something I'm just not sure what any help would be much appreciated thanks in advance to anyone willing to help

Either the battery is shorted (old and junk, shorted cell(s)) or the regulator/rectifier is a china knockoff, or both. If the regulator is a genuine Honda part, replace the bad battery right away. Clean up the motor and frame grounds when you do.

I think your right the new regulator is not a Honda part I ordered a cheap one from ebay. The battery will start it every time and none of the fuses are blown. I even tried pulling the fuses out while its running regulator still gets hot . at idle the input voltage from the alternator is around 80 to 90 volts go's up a little with rpm output 13.5 dc - 14.5 dc to the battery depending on rpm. I think this is all normal parameters I couldn't find anything about how much a.c. voltage the alternator should make. The ohm readings on the alternator are right where the manual says they should be. So I will order a new Honda regulator. Thanks for your help !!

Measure the battery voltage 24 hours after it was last recharged to learn its' resting voltage. If it measures 12.6 volts or higher at rest then it is still a useable battery. 12.5 volts and below at rest indicate a weakening one, with 12.4 volts and below being junk.

By the way china knockoff parts on Hondas don't save ya anything, ya gotta be very wealthy to afford them cause they're all garbage. Buy once, cry once.

EDIT: The regulator/rectifier should get warm during normal operation. Smokin' hot, no...
