you will need a new display. it won't start or run right until you replace the display.

" you think you got the right meter /speedometer " , that don't sound good , I have a 2002 450FW ( S) running and 4 of a mix of 450 ES and S parts bikes 99-2002 , I had looked into what fit what before and it gave me a headache , I know 2002, 03 and 04 S are the same , then there are other meters for 2001 down and others for ES , one year the es and the s are the same , you can go to partzilla and look at the different years that carry the same part number , you might have the wrong meter , how did you come about the one you got ?

If you got the number off the back the meter and it matches up with Honda numbers for your year then I would think you have the right one ------- what would make you feel just " pretty sure you have the right display " ----- was it new or used

so did you open every electrical connector plug and check for corrosion and apply dielectric grease to the connectors
