depends on which part is bad ?, short shifter shaft ?, easy. internal shifting shaft that runs from front to back ?, motor has to be split to replace.

Shade,

I will pull it into the garage and check it out. I think I did try to tighten the level itself and it didn't help much. Then I saw the spring loaded "triangles" with the 3 detent balls and thought that might be my problem. I will check it out.

the part with the metal balls is on the clutch, did you pull the whole front cover off ??. if you did ?, this has nothing to do with your problem.

Shade,

I actually checked it out. I only saw the balls/triangle parts in the manual and online, not on my bike. I did put a couple turns on the shift lever bolt that took out about 50% of the slop. There does appear to be some slop in the short shaft that the lever is on, but now it's really not too bad. What must have happened is the lever must have simply loosened up over the riding time. I do like the older splined shaft instead of the shaft with "flats" like the 2001.

Thanks for the help, I am going to hold off tearing into it until it gets worse. I will need to keep it tight to avoid further damage.
