2001 recon locked up shifter

My recon has a locked up shifter. IT was an ES model I put a manual shift on. She was getting more stubborn to shift, then just locked up hard. I put a manual shifter arm on it, but didn't remove the electric shift motor.

I have yet to split the case apart, but don't mind doing surgery in there. I left the ATV alone when it locked up last year. I think I tried removing the electric shift motor to see if it was locked up there.

Any common problems inside there, like the drum nut coming loose. While I'm in there anything else I should swap out? Should I remove the electric shift motor all together when done?
