I just picked up a used 2001 recon 250, and am wanting to change the fluids. What are you guys using for the engine oil and the rear gear case oil?

I was thinking of using Lucas Heavy duty 80W-90 Gear oil for the Rear Gear case, but not sure if it's Hypoid gear oil or not?

The motor oil you use has to be JASO MA (or JASO MA/2) rated for wet clutches. The brand you use is your decision... everyone has their own opinion when it comes to brand name.

The rear diff should be fine using your choice of Lucas 80w90.

If wanting Lucas, http://www.autozone.com/greases-and-gear-oil/gear-oil/lucas-oil-synthetic-trans-and-diff-gear-oil-sae-75w-90-32-oz-/612866_0_0?cmpid=PS:3:3:1&s_kwcid=AL!5142!3!193269939832!!!!303788367579!&ef_id=WFhV6AAAAO0PHAgy:20170714151404:s

Just a couple other thoughts on the newly acquired Recon. While doing a differential change, you might consider the spark plug, air filter, engine oil, which in turn will gives you an opportunity to really look the unit over. I noticed at my local dealer yesterday that GN4 oil per gallon was reasonably priced, i.e., around $20. Like others mentioned on engine oil, watch for wet clutches.

Just an update I changed the spark plug and it looked great, I used the Lucas 80w-90 gear oil for the rear end. Also I added a set of rear tires off a fourtrax 300 (24x9-11) and it looks much nicer I think, it took a lot of the sag out of the rear end. I'm waiting on a progressive type rear shock to help stiffen that up and will let you guys know if it helps or not.
