Hey guys I'm back. Fixed up a little Rancher the other day, posted it for sale and had been driving it here and there to make sure everything is good to go. Hopped on it the other morning and went flying through the pasture until I hit a pretty good "bump". She died instantly, the gear indicator is -- with no blinking, reverse and neutral light on, cranks but does not start. First thing I did was run an grab a 12 mm wrench and manually shifted it back into neutral, still the same, pulled off the negative cable to maybe "reset" still the same. Thought I'd ask if maybe their was something specific these symptoms point to before I rolled her back in the shop *sigh*.

i think your gear position switch is bad ?, or its not getting to the right spot because your shift drum is broken off at the switch ?.

So pull the engine and stator cover correct?
wellllllllll..you don't have to pull the motor........yet !..lol. remove the rear engine cover, this means the pull starter, elec starter, then the pull starter cage. jack the rear up as high as you can get it, or drain the oil ?. ( you will need new gaskets back here when putting back together ) DON'T USE RTV SEALANT !!!!!!!. once the rear engine cover is off where you can see the flywheel ?, you should be able to check the end of the shift drum for very easy play by turning it with a flat blade screw driver. if it wont turn easy ?, then the shift drum is ok, and your problem is in the switch ?, or connection ?, or wire harness ?. if the end of the shift drum DOES turn very easy with the screw driver stuck in the slot ?, well..then you must pull the motor, split it, and replace the shift drum, because this is what turns the gear position switch.

Alright, well I'll let everyone one know what it turns out to be when I get it in the shop. Just got a Recon finished up, and pulled off the front cover to one of my 450s to replace the timing chain. Turns out the tensioner is bad and was fully retracted up, ugh, off comes the jug...

Shadetree even though it was not smoking, will the rings need to be replaced or can I reuse them? I've never have tried

if the rings are new ?, and not fully seated in ?, then no, run them. if they are out of spec ?, as in ..well worn ?, replace. all depends on how worn the cylinder is ?, if the cylinder needs to be bored over ?, then you will need a whole piston kit, bored over, honed, then good to go.

Well, I just bought this 450 a week ago, it's obviously had a new top end put end, but not real recent in doesn't look like. I guess I pull it off and inspect... Thanks for the reply

So I just put that Foreman 450 back together (replaced the timing chain) now when I shift the foot lever stays either up or down.... I have to manually pull it back up when shifting into reverse, what's the deal I wonder? I've done quite a few of these and know it by memory, it shifted fine before I tore into it.

Omg, as I was unbolting the cover the and the foot shifter sprung back. Pulled the cover off and their was a piece of the old gasket stuck in the hole where the shift shaft goes. Bolted down it had enough pressure on it to cause it to stick. Always inspect everything to make sure it's clean!!! Lol
