2001 foreman 450es shifting problem

Intermittent shifting trouble; works sometimes then won't shift part way through a ride and have to use manual lever to get home. Then OK again later.
Problem: When trouble occurs, will not electrically shift. Attach manual shift lever and only R,1,5 will illuminate; 2,3,4 will not show on display. Have downloaded manual, read many posts here to help myself. New charged battery, fuses OK, have removed angle sensor and put back on but still have same trouble. Help please!

Have you followed the troubleshooting section in the ES chapter of the service manual? Since the '01 model doesn't store trouble codes, that's about all you can do........follow the troubleshooting chart and try to pinpoint the problem.
Wondering about the clutch adjustment, not sure about this (1st troubleshoot in manual). However because the problem is intermittment, I'm thinking bad connection is what I'm up against and should start there???
is your battery fully charged ?..test your angle sensor ?..thats about all i know to tell you on the elec shift models...i don't know alot about them..other than they cause alot of headaches for owners !..lol.
take if the angle sensor and clean it up and use some dielectric grease on the conection
Thanks for advise guys! If I want to buy a new angle sensor, any good options other than local dealer?

it really does not matter who you buy those from..either way..i can almost bet you..one of them will have to order it ?..something like that..most times wont be in stock..but..if i were you..i would get that part from a dealer.
Thanks, will give it go on the weekend.

Have similar prob, only mine will show all gears as I manually shift. The gear digits blink 8 times.I can ride using the manual shift lever w/ no problems, but I would like for it to work the way it was designed. Will get circuit tester and run diagnostics as it explains in the service manual.
The reason that redmud01's 450 doesn't show 2nd, 3rd, or 4th on the display, is that the gear position switch on the '98-'01 ES models only has positions for reverse, neutral, 1st, and 5th. On these models, the ECU determines whether the ATV is in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, by using engine RPM and vehicle speed. And if there's a problem with the ES system, it won't show those gears.

On the '02-'04 ES models, the gear position switch has positions for reverse, neutral, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, so it shows all gears, even if there's a problem with the ES system.
Did anyone ever figure out the intermittent shift problem? I'm having the exact same thing on a 2000 450es. It works somtimes when its cold, then won't work when cold, works somtimes hot, then wont' work hot. Wiggle some wires and it works, then quits working, try wiggling them again and it won't start working.

Brand new battery, all fuses good, adjusted clutch.

Es troubles:

I've had the same problem for a while now:icon_ cry:.....I still ride mine, but it does get aggravating when it want change:icon_ devil:. There is a cool trick I learned while messing around with it one day that works on mine and might work for you as well:icon_ rasta:. whenever it want change and the display starts flashing turn your key off and back on real fast, so that it keeps the motor running and it resets the sensor some how and wala'!! you can change gears again with the ES until it occurs again(of course you might want to stop to do this reset trick though I have done it going slow in 3rd gear)......I'm going to fix mine just as soon as I get in the mood by first cleaning my sensor and see if that will fix it and if that doesn't work, I will order a new sensor for it. This is a common problem with these ES bikes......Hope this helped.....:icon_gd:
I have seen that most of these problems come from bad connections or bad angle sensors. Fix the easy one first and go from there.

Yeah, turning the key off and back on, resets the ECU.
:happy:Update: Ok, I took the sensor off and cleaned it with a q-tip and pressure sprayed it with a can of compressed air-dust cleaner and it works perfect now....:icon_ lala:like new!!......It's a bit of a challenge getting to it, but with a couple of car ramps, small socket-set, and patients, no problemo!!:lifting:...there are only 2 bolts that hold the small metal cover over the sensor and 2 bolts that hold the sensor on....Oh yeah, I also cleaned the small rubber seal-ring inside as well, make sure you don't lose it when you take the sensor off and I also cleaned the sensor wire connection plug....:icon_gd:
