I have a 2000 recon 250 that stalls when put in gear. I replaced the carb. and it runs and idles fine, I adjusted the screw on the clutch cover, all the way in its like its in neutral, and I turned it out about 1 turn and it lunged forward and killed the engine( idle is low). When its in neutral it runs fine, but as soon as I put it in gear it lunges forword and kills the engine, if I have the rpms up it will run but the clutch wont release. any ideas? I am new to the forum and would appreciate any help from anyone. thanks in advance.

Have you had the engine apart for anything and might have put something back wrong? Make sure you have the clutch free play set right. If that's not the problem, then, the only other thing that I can think of would be that maybe one of the centrifugal clutch springs broke or came loose. The picture below shows how to adjust the clutch free play. It is for a Honda Fourtrax 300, but it should be the same for the Recon 250.

if you adjusted your clutch right...and you got the idle set high enough..then it sounds like your clutch disk might be burned up..unless like helmut stated..you had it apart..and while putting it back together.something got out or place/line..if after adjusting the clutch free play..and it still wont engage after you put it in gear..then your going to have to take the clutch side case off and see what the deal is from inside....could be a number of thing's wrong inside....faulty clutch lifter...disk/plates worn or burnt up..or weak springs/ or broke....sounds like you need to tear into it...that's about the only way your going to find out what your problem is...if you have never worked on a clutch before..i highly recommend a repair manual !!..it will save not only alot of trouble now for you..but it will also save you alotttttt of cash if you had to take it to the dealer to have them repair it. :)
