Have you tried to put it in any other gears? Make sure it's just first gear that don't work, before you tear into it.

yes its just 1st gear because my clutch was broken for a while and i would just slam it into gears (i was like 12) and now you have to start on 2nd gear which really isnt a problem because it starts going just fine. all gears but 1st are great. shifts nice and easily into the gears with no problems. it shifts into 1st just fine but it just grinds so ya should i just buy a new motor or what? its the original motor to the quad

well..if you think you can split the case..and fix the gear..the go for it..if not..then..waste your cash on another motor..if it was me..i'd try to fix what is broken..but..this is me..if you keep ridding it like it is..your gonna get all that broken metal into other gears.oil pump..dang near every thing..i say split the case..and fix it.

how would i split the case?
first thing you need to do..is get your hands on a service manual..repair manual for your bike..second..pull the motor out of the bike..strip every thing off that keeps you from taking the center bolts out ..these hold the center case halves together..try to pay close attention to any and all washers..as too where they rest..make sure you have some honda bond. or yamaha bond..as you will need to seal back up the case halves when you put them back together..first..get the service manaul..then get the sealant..then take motor out..then split the case..see what all is bad..and need replacing.

sounds confusing for me lol

do you know a rough estimate of how much its gunna cost if i just took it into a shop?

we have a big atv honda dealership not to far from here
cost ???..any time you mention dealer ship..that alone tell's me..stay away !..lmao..for what they would charge you to fix it..you may as well buy a new motor..thats about how much they are gonna charge you...lol..this is why i do all my own work..so i save a ton of cash from not giving it to the dealer ships..lol.

I agree with Shadetree. For the price they would charge you at a dealership, you could buy another good, used ATV.
