1999 trx300fw timing chain

I'm trying to put my timing chain back on the gear and onto the camshaft but I believe we accidentally moved the bottom gear and now the timing could be off...How can i check to see if the bottom gear is in the right position. Any answers would be helpful...thanks ahead of time.....

Thanks a lot that did help a lot but one more question the manual says to make sure it is in the compression stroke I'm guessing that they mean the valves closed but I how do i make sure it is in the compression stroke if I don't have the head cover on yet with the rockers to open or close valves...thanks again
