The issue I have is that my 4wheeler started a little knock awhile back. It was barely noticeable and when I changed the oil I noticed a gas smell in the oil. The next time I changed the oil I bought a oil filter that was not from the honda dealer but was a cross reference. The next day I was riding and it idled for about 30mins after I got back on it I rode maybe another 20mins and cut it off. The next day I rode about 200 yards dumped some corn and rode back before I got back it stopped dead and cut off. I restarted it and it cut off again. I released the compression and was able to ride it the next 50yds to park it. I have tried not to ride it much at all, but when I did it has a more noticeable knock. Any ideas about this problem would be greatly appreciated.Other than this it is in excellent condition and have never had to make a repair to it anytime, just normal maint. Again any ideas would be greatly apprecited. SNW

Thanks for the reply. I have not had a chance to pull the plug, but seems like the last time I had done that it was light brown. I will check again and post back. Thanks again

Not that I can tell. When the motor cut off and stopped would that mean something was broke even though I could restart it and ride it. If it is a carb problem what can I do to correct this. Thanks

Wayyyy to rich...change the air filter and clean the carb take it off and give it a good cleaning. your not running it with the choke on are you? Also check your exhaust for any restrictions.

No, I have not run it with the choke on. I replaced the plug. I would also like to know if I have never purged the exhaust would that cause this. I don't ride it to just be riding. Most of the time for work around my land, and hunting. It has never been ridden hard, and low hours for the year model. I bought it new so it has not been hurt. When I replaced the plug it did settled the knock down some. My major concern is the fact that it cut off while I was riding it without warning. Is it a big deal or could it be something fairly simple that would cause that. It has never done anything like that. It did start back afterward and ran briefly then I had to release the compression to start it after which I was able to ride to the house. I have ridden it some since then but not very long at all. I wanted to make sure if it was something major that I wouldn't make it worse. Thanks again to all that have replied!

When you changed the oil filter, you didn't put the filter in backwards, did you? They go in one way. If you put it in backwards it will block the oil flow. If you don't know, it would be a good ideal to check, because I have seen a lot put in backwards. If I remember right, the hole goes out toward the oil filter cover, but it should say on the oil filter. Don't know if this is your problem or not, but I just thought I would mention it, since it has a knock.

If it was the oil filter backwards would that do any major damage . It ran all of about 1 hour total after I changed the oil. Is that enough time to hurt the motor. I will check the screen. Also the run time was mostly at idle. Thanks for all the info

pop the cover and check to see if it's in like they said if it is in correct then start looking elsewhere.

O.K. I don't remember if it was in wrong or not when this first happen I had checked the oil and decided to change it again I took the filter out and replaced it. I did not pay attention to it when I took it out. The one I put back in is right. Would it damage it more if I rode it. I have been running it some but not riding it. It sounds like it has a slight tick-tick-etc. The faster it runs the less it is noticeable. I would like to adjust the carburetor. Could anyone tell me the proper way to do this. I have worked on motors some. Mostly small engines and tractors. I just don't want to mess something up. The ticking sound is coming from the head. Like I said it's not that loud. Most people would hardly notice it. Thanks again for everyones help.

If it's just a slight tick coming from the head, then, you might just need to adjust your valves. Those 300 Hondas can be pretty noisy even when the valves are set right. It is normal. Not real loud noises, though. I used to have one and I had one of those removable tops to go on it. When I put the top on it, the top would echo the sound and it would sound like everything in the engine was getting ready to fly out. When I would take the top off, it would sound so smooth and quiet. But it sounds like your valves need to be adjusted.
