I don't know if this is your problem, but sometimes when a CDI goes bad, it won't spark until you quit pushing the start button and then it will spark once. But usually, when the CDI goes bad, they won't start at all.

Also, your kill switch could be going bad. Try moving your kill switch back and forth and see if it has any effect on the spark.

problems like these..can lead to a few things..bad stator..bad pulse generator..bad reg/rec..bad coil..bad ground ..list goes on and on..your best bet..start with the simple easy to get to parts..then move on to the hard to replace..well..not hard..just involves more things to remove..thats all...if you have a service manual..this will show you how to check each hard part while it's still in the motor..or on it...at least you can check the part in question..before you go removing side covers..or front and back covers if it's a new model honda !..lol.

In the mid 90's, your problem was addressed by Honda in a service bulletin. The problem is a faulty Ignition Control Module, (CDI, black box), whatever you want to call it. About 10 years ago Honda was covering it under warranty.
