Hi Everyone! I know of all of the Fourtrax owners, someone has had this happen before. I want to save money taking in for someone to tell me what you guys already know. Anyways, this thing has been running like a champ, but the last few months when I shift into 1st gear (only 1st, not Reverse or any other gear) it makes a clunking noise from the rear. I dont feel a loss in power, just the noise. It almost sounds like something is loose, not grinding, but loose. I am going to drain/refill the rear differential as well since I haven't done since I bought last year and hopefully that helps.

Thanks in advance for any and all insights! Happy Riding!!

The engine oil is also the transmission oil. So, you would check the engine oil dipstick.
First gear is real low, so shifting from second to first may create more compression braking. It could be the universal joint, or the rear differential. I'd get it up off of the ground, and rotate the rear tires as you listen. Reverse direction, and see if you can pinpoint the source.

Have you checked the simple things first such as swing arm bearings? Rear shaft UJ? When selecting first gear your getting a lot more torque through the transmission. I’d have thought you’d be getting the same noise/feeling in reverse though?
