Ok, so my main question is:
will a coil from a 1999 trx300fw work on a 1991 trx300fw? they are different part numbers... 1991 vs 1999 but i dont know if that is simply a physical difference, or if the parts will not interchange for other reasons..

the reason i ask, is the last time i was at my camp(heart of winter), i couldnt start my quad. it had absolutely zero spark.. which i found odd as when i had parked it 3 months earlier(summer). Im about to go up to camp again, and i hope to fix it there, rather than bring it home.
I'm suspecting it is either:
mice got into wiring
bad coil
bad cdi

so my secondary question is: do you think it could be anything else? i bought a cheap aftermarket cdi to swap in, i also want to take up a replacement coil (hence my main question). I did see that there is also a "alarm module", which apparently is for the oil temp? but im unclear if it will lock out spark if it goes bad, or if it just operates the indicator light.

i suppose it could also be a bad kill switch? any way to quickly test that?

my plan is, toss in new coil, see if i get spark, new coil, test again... search for bad wires. any other diagnostics i could do would be great!

thanks for your help!!!!

I have a couple questions. Why are you wanting to swap parts over from different years of bikes?
Also the cheap CDI its going to do anything, you need to go buy an OEM CDI

Do you have the service manual and wire diagrams? Sounds like some test light trial and error before you buy parts.

And yeah, I agree with buying Honda brand electrical components. It's sucks paying that much but there are so many bad stories out there about the cheapos. I just put a $100 cdi into my 86 3504x4 that I only paid $200 for.

thanks for the advice folks. the aftermarket cdi has phenomenal reviews and is only being used as a diagnostic tool. if it fixes the problem, i planned on buying a used oem one. actually, ill just cancel the order and buy a used oem one. definitely not buying a new oem one.

as for swapping a different year coil, again, its diagnostic and i can get a used one for 6 bucks, vs the one that is for my year that is 13. just trying to pinch pennies where i can if i could confirm that the parts are swappable..

Check your fuses first.

Neutral light come on?

Headlights work?

I just had one with a bad CDI, and the CDI was bad because the voltage regulator was bad, allowing too many V's to go to the CDI, frying it.
ill definitely check fuses. neutral light, headlights all work. will i be able to test the regulator/rectifier to avoid frying the new cdi? id figure that you would need it running before being able to test the voltage output?

Do you have the service manual and wire diagrams? Sounds like some test light trial and error before you buy parts.
i do have the manual, and it looks like the tests are mostly pretty much straight forward... i will give them a try, but being as its a 4 hour drive to camp, and id like to get the quad running when im up there, id prefer to buy the parts i need to get it up and running while there, rather than test them and have to come back to get parts next time im up. having spare parts is never a bad thing, so if the parts dont fix it, its not the end of the world. plus, tossing on a new cdi and new coil is easier than running 15x ohm tests(just my thought process, not making a definitive statement)

anyone know anything about the alarm module and if that could be the cause? manual seems pretty vague.

Get a used Rectifier from Powersportsnation.com and swap it on just in case.

$11 shipped, and you'll have a spare if your current one is good.

Take a voltmeter and when you get it running, immediately check the voltage at the battery and make sure it's not putting out over about 14.5 volts.
wow, i hadnt heard of powersportsnation.com. that just got me the coil, cdi, and rectifier for $30 shipped. insane. thanks!!!!
