My 1991 four trex will not charge the battery... just changed the regulator without helping... kick starts very easy and with lights on and Reving the engine the light actually dim... runs fine

Definitely sounds like you’re looking in the right place. There are a few diagnostics in the service manual—click my links in my sig block.
One is a continuity check but I don’t think there is a way to check generated power directly instead indirectly for volts/amps coming out of the rec/reg. Check the manual
I might be wrong hopefully someone will call me on it
