1989 Rear axle replacement.

Hello folks,

New here and looking for some information from you all. I recently bought a '89 300 that was in good condition. It was certainly ready to ride minus a battery at purchase which I have since bought.

I was out yesterday for a small run and heard a little bang from my left rear, the bike became a little sluggish in the slushy snow I was driving on - it felt as if it was pulling to the left. I was able to drive the quad home and jacked it up of the ground and rotated the tires, the left rear was the issue from the hub to the axle with the splines warn smooth.

My question, I have found a used Axle and hub but it is out of a '94. Are these compatible? What are the differences if any?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Searched a bit on Ebay and seems like from '88 to 2000 it will fit
yes that axle will work. the only difference is the length of the hubs.

Be sure to buy the axle with hubs.

'93-2000 hubs will not fit on a 88-92 axle. or vise versa.

the '93 hubs are longer, cuz the '93 axle has longer hub splines, that's why Manny said to get the hubs with it. if I was you ?, I would just buy a new oem axle, and new oem hubs, and be done with it. don't risk buying something that may..or may not last/be good ?. your call, but I know what I would do. and welcome to forums.

I am going to look into this set tomorrow and inspect how it looks. New on eBay is 190USD with 90USD+ for shipping. I'm in Canada so we are talking easy 400CAD. Id like to go new and if tomorrow doesn't pan out I have no choice but to, just didn't want to dish out that much.

Before you splash all that cash, have you considered fitting a complete 350D rear end in place of your stock axle?
If you have a welder and an angle grinder and know how to use them I'm sure it's a mod you would be capable of.
It may work out a lot cheaper for you.
I am an OEM guy and prefer to buy proper parts if I can gettum. Sometimes you can piss a lot of riding time away trying to pinch pennies too hard.

yep, I like to do it once if posb ?, no reason to keep doing it over an over, waste of time, and waste of cash..lol. do it right ?.or don't do it all is what I go by.

weld the hub to the axle and keep riding while you look for a good deal on a new axle , bearings , seals and brake shoes , then when you do fix it "right " you can do the complete job

It may go that direction, eventually. For now I picked this one up as it had absolutely no play in the hubs. The bike has a speedometer on it and has clocked 14xxxkms since '89 and I am pretty sure this is the first axle its needed. If I can get half of the kms on this axle Ill be happy.

I am as well. Proper maintenance and care of the Quad (like anything) goes a long way. Driving the bike through water and mud and not doing more than regular maintenance on the rear end is going to cause issues quicker.

Thought about it, the thing is its the left side and to remove the axle you need to pull it through from left to right. The complete job was just done 2 months ago, it really is only needing the axle.


Thanks for the feedback. I picked up the axle and hubs as there is no play, will install later this afternoon.
