I picked up this 87 Honda a few months ago, I have finally caught up with my projects and have started on this one. So far I stuck a ebay starter, ignition coil, fresh oil change and sort of rebuilt the carb so far..... I got it running blew smoke for a bit but its clearing up now. Shifts thru all the gears no problem. Had to bang on the CDI to get any spark out of it. I got a seat off ebay for it, anyone have recommendations for new tires?

I seen 'em a lot rougher looking! Those old tanks are fun projects, even though most parts for them are discontinued. PSN may have a few good OEM parts left over from a couple bikes they got in last spring. Keep an eye on fLeebay for an occasional good deal on NOS parts too... Keep it in mind that there are a gazillion parts on the 87 350D that fit that year & model only, so look up all part numbers before buying.

With all that said, I have the same bike so if you run into a tough spot just hollar!

I do like the mudlites too, probably going to be putting them on in the future. For now trying to get the dang float mechanism out of the tank so I can try and clean it. I am assuming after removing the four nuts the whole assembly should slide out.... I think the old float is swollen from sitting in that old fuel for a lifetime. It will not come out of the hole. Trying to find a replacement float assembly is might be tough.

I didn’t think about that float-forgot you have the D model with fuel gauge

Here’s my 86 with Mud Lites—all around good tires— it didn’t get stuck in this snow but for deeper snow I dunno...

BTW I am an OEM Guy—I do not fuss with mods or cheap parts, I do stay out of deep mud, and I don’t abuse my machines. I do on occasion drive vigorously on trail but this machine will pay you back for it if you do. My friends rib me about dragging ass but they don’t realize what kind of feedback I get from two solid axles!

yup stock tires. Be careful the manual specifies the same circumference tire be used all around, because of the full time 4wd.

You can run 25s on the rear no problem; i don’t know about the front. I think yes if they’re 8 wide not 9.There’s no lift kit for these and just as well.

I never have figured out the offset of these wheels—IMO no other wheels look good on the early Fourtrax—never could get the stagger right anyway so stuck with stock wheels.

You will also see the rear wheels hug the brake drum. That’s a good thing—the offset on other wheels exposes the drum and looks very odd—well you wouldn’t see it while riding would you:D

I am not an experienced mechanic like @retro or @shadetree or so many others here, but I am an addicted enthusiast. When you get ready to do your tank, petcock and fuel pump make sure you start a new thread so we can all jump on board that topic. Will help other “Chili Pepper” owners too.

BTW here are four others I’ve restored—yes you’ll be addicted too.

No you need to get through both. Do a vinegar soak overnight.
Use a 3/16” brush on a flexible handle. You probably have scaled rust in there.
Don’t push in too hard or too far; about an inch at a time. Too fast or too hard you’ll bend the brush and never get it done.
Also there’s a basket screen inside the tank—the pipe are about a foot long—don’t push too hard or you might damage the basket and or hang up the brush.

I am putting vinegar in from the outside hopefully in will work its way down that line. I soaked it for a day a couple days ago and that didn't do the trick. If I can't get this to work one of those new plastic tanks might be in my future.

I have been cleaning out my tank, in the process I tried to blow compressed air through the fuel pick up lines. I can only get air to go thru the left hole. Is the right hole supposed to be plugged?
There may be some disagreement ...... but, some of us run our machines on 'reserve' all the time. The small amount of condensation moisture that occurs doesn't get a chance to build up in the tank ....

I also run occasionally on reserve; you can also remove the drain plug to occasionally empty the fuel tank.
While you have the petcock off inspect the lever seal position and condition by rotating the fuel lever. You want the holes in the lever seal to be properly aligned with the on or reserve position. Also look for ripped edges.

This works for me, when I run out of fuel, I known I am out of fuel and walking. Not cursing, upset, or mad; I know who is responsible for this walk, "me", not some reserve mechanism that may or may not work when needed. LOL.
