More and more shops may not want to touch it, since there's so many unavailable parts. One of the projects I picked up was a bike that went in for a ring job 2-3 years ago. The Honda dealer broke off a bolt in the jug and promptly gave him his rig back with everything they had removed to that point in a box.

replaced c.d.i. with an aftermarket ?, or oem from Honda ?, my money says your c.d.i. is bad. your worst fear will be locating a c.d.i. for that 1986 model.

Hey Shade, No it was OEM... why do you think its the cdi again given its symptoms?
I know where to get another OEM one btw...how do you test those things ?
you can't test them, they either work..or they don't. battery fully charged ?, that year won't run without a fully charged or charging battery. have you tested the reg/rec to see if it's charging the battery ?.

i will bank on this: 9 out of 10 times, when they die when put in gear ?, this tells me there is a part in the c.d.i. that is bad ?,or..your not getting enough spark from your battery ?.

Only TRX350D Foremans (87 & up) have a DC-CDI ignition. 86 & 87 TRX350 Fourtrax models need a battery for fuel pump operation, but the battery is not used (or required) for the ignition system on the Fourtrax models.

That doesn't rule out the CDI or any other ignition component as possibly being weak and causing this stalling problem though.

First things to check are the basics: Fuel cap vent hose open, no plugged hoses? Fuel filter not plugging up? Petcock not corroded and restricted? Fuel tank free of rust particles? Carburetor set up according to the service manual specs? NGK spark plug in good condition? Ignition coil and spark plug lead in good working condition? Coolant fan operating correctly? Can be a gazillion things... most of them are cheap or free and very easy to fix.
