Hey guys. I have a 86 honda 250x. It makes a loud popping noise when I put it into first. 2ed gear engages fine. But at high rpms it disengages and makes the same noise. 3-5 work fine. Any help or advice would be great.

welcome. first, down load the service manual, your gonna need it !. second: sounds like a bad shift drum ?, worn gear dogs ?, this means: time to split the engine.

is this something someone with a simple understanding about auto work could do alone?

I always advise people to do two things, download the factory service manual and take photos of disassembly, lots of photos. It’s a nerve wrecking task first time you split a case but it’s certainly doable.
