Agreed ^^^^^ you might end up pulling the carb and giving it a good cleaning, the idle circuit sounds like it's got some trash in it?

I'm going to say Coil or Stator but the coil is easy just grab a 12v coil and hook it up I had an XR200 bike with an 80's ford escort coil on it for years.

it doesn't have spark
The very first thing I would do is invest in a Honda Specific Service Manual. That way you can start tracing the circuit that makes the ignition circuit do it's thing.

Because of the age. I would check things like the coil wiring making sure the wires are not only attached, but the connections are tight. Through the years these wires move, and the strands get weak and break off.

Also go through the Start/Stop switch, the Ignition Switch, and any switch or part that has wires running to it. You can check them one at a time, and fix them one at a time. This way you don't have a bunch of wires off of what they go to, and can't remember where they went.

But do the manual first. Buy a used Manual specifically for the year and model of your ATV. Don't buy Clymers or any generic type manual. Buy the HONDA Specific.

I just sold my manual for that very year on ebay, so check there first. Then, search google. New it will run you around $45 with shipping. You can also look at tradebit, and might be able to download the service manual for 5 bucks.

Under the left shark-fin vent beside the air breather chamber is where the coil is located I think. Be sure it's plugged in and any of those connectors are tight. On the right side under the removable side panel is another set of plugs. Make sure they are tight too.
