Hey, I just got a 1986 honda fourtrax 300. I'm relatively new to this. I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with details for it, mainly like what oil can I use in it, how often to do oil changes etcetera. Any help with proper care tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

no you did not just get a 1986 trx300 !, honda did not make the trx300 until 1988 bro . what you may have is a 1986 trx350 fourtrax ?. or, you have your trx300 years messed up ? . post a pic, then we can see what you REALLY have ? .

Does it have a headlight between the handlebars or No?

If yes, then TRX350

If no TRX300

I'm just going off the year the guy said, but maybe this helps a little more.

looks like an early 90s 2wd to me..

yeah, early , '88-'92 ?. I think I see struts on the front ?. deff at least an '88, but no where near 1986.

Locate the VIN number and you'll know for sure what year it is. VIN should be located on a horizontal bar behind the front brush guard. If not there, keep looking on all the front parts of the frame. The VIN in 17 digits long.

The 10th digit of the VIN number is a letter and indicates the year it was made.

J - 1988
K - 1989
L - 1990
M - 1991

where's the rest ??..lol. N=1992, P=1993,R=1994,S=1995,T=1996,V=1997,W=1998,X=1999,Y=2000.

In case anyone is wondering why certain letters are missing from said list ^^^ ?, honda does not use them !. reason: because you can get the letter O confused with the number 0, this is why. some letters get to close to numbers or small letters, so they just dont use them .

Can also use table in the service manual to cross-ref the engine serial to year.

Thanks guys was able to find out it's a 88. And was able to find a copy of the owners manual.
