I recently purchased a 1986 honda 200sx yo ride around on my property. It was having issues starting .I drained oil ,put new spark plug, and food off carb and cleaned and it ran fine for like 10 minutes then stalled back out.and I put a new battery on it..Do I need to just buy a new carburetor or what do I need to do ..thanks

Junk in the tank might be getting into the carb. The fuel tank and petcock might need cleaning along with another carb disassembly & cleaning. You can get a copy of the service manual in the manuals forum linked HERE. Welcome to the forums!

Welcome to the forums :)

As retro has said above, clean the fuel tank (you can flush with diesel, kerosene or paraffin) change the fuel line (add an inline filter) and clean the carb throughly. The carb needs to be surgically clean, i always rebuild mine on a white plastic sheet, easier to spot debris.

A lot can be hapnin with a machine you just bought: old fuel, dirty carb, overheating. Was it running very good and performance deteriorated before it quit? Or did it quit when you hit the throttle as in choked?

What KeiHin number is stamped on the carb? See the stamp on this carb?

How well did you clean the carb? Did you inspect the choke valve (my bet is it’s worn and needs replaced)? Here is a pic of an 85 200sx QA02A carb I bought off fleabay and cleaned just for practice. Seller listed it as a junk trx350 carb. Yours will look similar except the 86 doesn’t have a removable emulsion tube-I think QA08A?

Only buy OEM parts these 200sx quads all use different carbs, so stick with your model carb and a Shindy rebuild kit to ensure best reliability and performance. Spray the whole thing down with Deep Creep, stick it in the freezer to help oil penetrate the screw threads. Be very careful removing screws esp the pilot jet if you break it off in there you’ll need a machinist to remove it. Don’t throw away any parts; there’s people on fleabay who will buy junk carbs for parts.

Ok I finally got back around to my 200sx and I ordered a shindy rebuild kit and installed and i replaced the fuel line and installed a fuel filter..so now when I crank it it cranks up fine but now it smokes and it revs up and down (not wildly up and down ) ..thanks in advance

This sounds like a new problem... could there something wrong with the choke? Did you follow the service manual recommendations during assembly? Was the float level within spec? How many turns out do you have on the pilot screw?

Check you oil.......does it smell like gas and at a higher level before it sat up? The carb may have flooded during the 4 weeks it sat up and polluted the oil with gas. This can cause it to smoke and run rich. The engine running faster and slower is usually a lean condition. I would double check all the work you just did......especially the carb.
