Ok ya'll here is the latestest in my drama. I pulled the left side crankcase cover off. The starter reduction gear a/b are shot. Torn all to hiii. The teeth on the end of the starter are shot as well. The stator is screwed too. The copper wraps are ground down there are metal shaveings in the fly wheel area. The fly wheel spins freely after you kick start it. That is the noise I was hearing. I have ordered the stuff to fix it but have to wonder how it happened? The fly wheel one/way bearing is bent and that don't make much since either. Remeber with all this damage in the this is a running 250 fourtrax that don't smake or knock. Any idea as to what could have caused all the damage inside this thang? It is obvious it has been apart before too.:icon_cussing:

Thank your right. The starter had one screw in it and it was loose. I believe the medal I have found in the thing come from the teeth and all on the starter and the reduction gears coming apart. Anybody out there have any reduction gears they want to part with. I need some.

It's getting hard to find parts for those 250's. I hardly ever see any Fourtrax 250's around where I live anymore. I see plenty of the Fourtrax 300's. They only made the 250's for three years, 1985-1987. They were good 4-wheelers, though. In my opinion, they were just as tough as the 300's.

The 300 starter and gears are set up about the same as the 250, but I don't know if they will interchange or not, but they might.

Fastas, he needs part #10 in the diagram below. It's the gear with two gears machined together, a large gear with a small gear on the back of it. In the diagram below, it just shows it as a single gear, but its double. I looked the gear up for both the 300 and 250 and both gears have the same number of teeth.(43T/18T). So, I guessing it will work if it's the same diameter.

Actually that diagram is for the 300, but the 250 looks the same.

it would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if it would fit. It was bothering me that all the diagrams I see were only showing the one gear. Anyway I have some "vin ranges" that will work. The 350 is with in that range and it you look up those parts they show the same part number.

It might work. Wouldn't that be something?

No kidding man... an electric start 250X with a back-up kicker...LOL I think I'm going to find me a 300EX left side cover.
Moose, you would also need a magneta/flywheel with the one-way bearing bolted to the back of it, with the starter gear in it. I wonder if it would work on the 250X crank? Also, there's a round, recessed hole in the block that the shaft #7(diagram) fits back in to hold it in place. I wonder if the 250X would have that? Another problem might be if the 250X doesn't have the two mounting holes for the starter bolts.
