1986 Fourtrax 250 - just getting acquainted

Hi all, this is my first post and my first ATV - picked it up for a song; it runs and drives pretty well, but no brakes and no starter (possibly if I install a battery the starter might work....). I've owned many two-wheelers but not being familiar with the quads, my first question is: Would this book be worth it? https://www.autobarn.net/atv-basics-book.html.

Thanks Fish!, I just meant, was the book worth spending $24 on.... it's the Haynes "ATV Basics"

and thanks for the valuation, i only paid 300 and it runs, drives and doesn't smoke, so I figure I'm ahead!

I'll probably be posting more pretty soon as I get busy trying to repair the brakes...

and should I really be a "junior member" at 74 years of age?!?!

Thanks again all! I will certainly try "fleebay" for manuals! And, good point about the battery, will also do that ASAP. Now, I have a new question; don't know if i should start a new thread for this? Like I said, machine has no brakes at all. I'm just gonna work on one at a time (rear first). When I try to move the actuators - both cable and pedal - for the rear brake, they move a little bit like they want to work. The cable is probably shot so I'll replace that. But the main question is: why won't the pedal budge at all? I can't see anything that's keeping it from moving. Is there some locking mechanism that I can't see?
