08 Rancher I picked up

8892 Views 68 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Jeepwm69
Found this one late last week. Got it fairly cheap. Cylinder is cracked (how the hell do you do that?), piston skirt it broken off and in the bottom of the motor. That said, it's complete for the most part (side plastics are missing) and the crank doesnt' have any play.

Initially I was going to rebuild this one and resell it, but now the brother in law is making noises about wanting it.

I just put a new top end on my wife's 420AT, so I think what I'm gonna do is buy a new 500 cylinder and piston, put those on her 420, and put the top end from her 420 onto this one.

Anyhow, plastics need to be cleaned up, racks painted, will tear the engine down and clean everything out, new seals, new top end, new timing chain, then it hopefully will be good to go.

Ow, that hurt Carol. Piston looks too small and only oil ring?
No uncle Goob this is a 420 the cylinder is off. It's just tucked down the lower unit. The rings are probably obliterated somewhere down in the engine lol
Jeep knows 420's and will spot it for a laugh .... may have to zoom "IN" the pic of the top of the piston to get it.
An aftermarket WSM .5mm oversize 420 piston...? Unfortunately the "tech" installed it backwards despite it being clearly marked. :-(

Thats why I don't buy bikes anymore that have been "rebuilt", or even look like someone might have "worked on it" or "repaired" something on it unless I know the person. Nowadays if it isn't stock, original and unmolested I walk away from them. I won't even work on other folks cobbled up bikes anymore. Humans got real stupid real quick these last coupla' decades. Dangerously so.

Anyway, I imagine that one is done.
^^^^* Retro but I know you had a laugh out loud <img src="http://www.hondaatvforums.net/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" class="inlineimg" /> .... dang thing is surely backwards ... and by the wear looks like it was like that for a bit lmao
This is the kind of crap for sale in Louisiana .. or down south... they tear up all kinds of expensive toys. I buy em for pennies and fix em up however I bought this one to pick parts from. Don't think I'll be using much tho lol

Yeah, at first I wasn't laughing, but when I saw the heavy skirt wear on the piston it finally got to me!

That isn't a Louisiana problem though, its a nationwide problem getting worse real quick! I been around marginal idiots my whole life, I know what they are capable of and I'm perfectly OK with them. But these last couple generations scare me! Good on you for your willingness to clean up their messes after them! LOL

It seems in our education system there are no failures, everyone passes, so what's with these engine failures?

Slap a new set of rings on it. It'll be fine.:D

Can you imagine the noise that made to get to that point?
