Hello everyone. My first post from MN. I have a stock 08 Rancher, manual shift, 4x4, Last week I started my wheeler and drove it outside. 5 minutes later I restarted it to bring it back in. When I did there was a high pitch noise from the starter. I drove it around everything was normal I restarted it again and got the same noise. I started about another 20 time over the week with same result it fires up every time and runs fine. I pulled the starter a few days ago. I tried to turn the shaft by hand and it was really rough. I pulled it apart and found all magnets except 1 were trashed. Bought new starter and put back in and to my surprise had the same loud high pitch noise upon start up. Started to search online not a lot out there with this same issue seems like anybody out there with starter clutch or gear issue says starter just spins and will not turn over motor. Mine starts every time. From what I can see looking through starter hole the starter gear looks in good shape. Starter bearing feels smooth. Starter gear turns in one direction and not the other(one way bearing)Is it just starting to go bad and will eventually fail? It looks like a real pain to fix. According to manual you have to remove motor to be able to remove rear case cover . Any info would be Greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!!!

Kruzman, have you had any luck finding info on your problem. I have had exactly the same experience and there is little help online, yet I'm told this is a common problem.? I got a rough estimate from a "hobbyist" mechanic of $400-$500 LABOR, and if it is a "deeper" problem he said "I wouldn't do it, it wouldn't be worth fixing". I can't afford a new or used atv, but I live in the country and have had an atv for over 20 yrs,,and I'm spoiled, I need one. I guess I'll have to fix it myself, but having problem getting helpful info online. Either no one has ever done it or they don't want to talk about it :) The manual says pull the engine, I think it can be done without that. Pull the rear "half"(rear diff, swing arm etc,)and go for it. :) It will be a while before I can get to it, still cleaning up after the storm here in S. Tex.
PLEASE post back if you have any ideas. Thanks, Gary
