08 Honda 420 es making noise in neutral

5215 Views 41 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  shadetree
I just got my 2008 Honda 420 es and in neutral it is making a grinding, rattling noise that increases in volume with increased RPM. Runs and drives great and shifts fine which makes me believe that the transmission and Top end of the motor must be functioning properly. If anyone has any ideas of what it may be or if you have had a similar problem please help me out. Thanks :grin:grin

its posb the water pump has thrown a bearing ?.
instead of guess work ?, why don't you down load the service manual from the site here, and start taking it apart. I would start at the front , pull the front cover off ( drain oil first ! ), and start inspecting the clutch, shifting area, and see if anything doesn't look normal ?. if nothing there looks bad ?, you very well may have to dig deeper into the motor ?. who knows ?..until you dig in :).
I might have to, have the manual but hate to take a perfectly running and driving motor apart for a noise. Oil has not been change in a while so might try some new oil and a filter first. What type do you guys recommend for a 420 rancher?
if its that new ?, then its under warranty ?!..lol. if not ?..why worry about it ?. whats the worse that can happen, you take it apart, and can't get it back together ?..lol. don't be afraid to tear it apart !!!. you got us to help you, and the service manual, sooooooooo ??????????. it wont fix itself !. and changing the oil wont make a bit of difference to be honest. as for what oil ?. this is an open an closed case around here..same thing with winches, tires, some things are just left up to the owner :). myself ?..I run castrol full syn, 10w-30, or 10w-40, one thing you must know for a fact ?..IT MUST BE MADE FOR WET CLUTCHES !!!.

Here is a video of the noise. Anyone have an idea where I should start looking I'm thinking the timing chain...
very well could be the cam chain. loose valves, someone been in the front cover already ?, I see a lot of yamahabond sticking between the front cover and engine case...lol. crank it up, take a long screw driver, put the end all over the engine, starting at the front cover, put your ear on the handle, listen, sound loud ?, move to the top, at the rocker box, same thing. I say start with checking the valves. there is a great sticky in the repair section by me explaining how to set and adjust valves on all 4-strokes ( my method ), very good info, you should read it :).
Only thing I would be worried about is taking it a part and putting it back together wrong. I have rebuilt 4 stroke dirt bike motors in the past but this looks totally different. Might start tearing into it today then and know what the problem is for sure.
kinda hard to put it back together wrong if your reading/looking at service manual ?!..lol.
Checked my valve clearances today and they were very loose, used your method and adjusted them. Just got this atv and dont know the history so hoping to valve adjustment will help. Starting it up tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. If it's no better will be checking out the clutch side of the motor. Thanks for the help guys:grin
please keep us posted !!!.
So adjusted my valves and noise is about the same so time to start taking the clutch side apart!!! Oil change on Display is off now. Lol have to drain it again
with it being an '08 ?, chances are,,,the cam chain is on its way out...lol. least your cam chain is only about 30 bucks ?, cam chain for a '99 is 145.00 retail..lol. ( no I did not pay that price ).
when you order a new cam chain, don't forget to get a front clutch cover gasket !.
Yes, it has about 6000km and I'm sure the cam chain has never been touched, might be time for a top end too. Can you buy a clutch cover gasket or do you just use Honda bond? Thanks
you need a clutch cover gasket, please do not use hondabond or yamabond on the front clutch cover ! :).
Looked at the manual and it said to use a gasket maker, sealant. Also looked at a parts diagram and dont see a gasket available so is it just gasket maker then? Thanks
fair enough, if no gasket is there to start with ?, then yes, you can use yamabond or hondabond. if there is a gasket anywhere ?, then replace with gasket.
Looks like there is no gasket but I'm sure this things been pulled apart before. Lol about to pull the clutch cover off so hopefully I see a stretched timing chain!!! :grin
i'm sure you will !..lol.

Looks like I found the problem, but is the tensioner also bad? I included a video and it looks like it is moving it and out a little. It is just because it is maxed out? Here's a video. Thanks alot

yep..chain is shot, and tensioner is not looking good either, replace both of them. oh, please dont crank it over like your doing without oil in the engine !..lol.

Alright looks like I will be buying a OEM tensioner and chain then. So you think that's what's causing the ticking it sure seems like it and I know not to turn it over without oil but just got too excited that I found the problem. Lol
unless your valves are not adjusted right ?, then a new cam chain, and chain tensioner will solve your problem :).
matter of fact, after you install the new chain, and tensioner , go back and re-adjust the valves :).

Oh, I adjusted those valves perfectly. But will for sure check them again after.Lol, looks like I need a clutch puller too and some Honda bond. Is that it or do you recommend anything else well I have it apart. Will obviously check all the clutch disk clearances as well. Thanks :grin:grin
check the friction disk, clutch arms, replace if needed ?, yamabond/hondabond, clutch puller tool. cam chain, chain tensioner, air impact gun to zip the nuts off, 1/2 drive,27mm deep well impact socket to fit the clutch nuts. this should be all you need :).
Ok great ordering the parts now so will be updating you guys when they come in, and are installed in about 2 weeks!!!:grin:grin:|:grin
good deal, yes..please keep this thread updated for future owners ! :).

Ok so here's the update, got the new Honda can chain and tensioner and installed them. The old tensioner was completely maxed out so was probably still good but I changed it out anyways. Installed the new parts, put back together used some Hondabond on the case, filled with oil, READJUSTED VALVES and started it up. No noise sounds perfect now and way smoother. THANKS A LOT EVERYONE for the help.
yvw, thank you for the update !!, glad ya got it fixed !!.
