08 Honda 420 es making noise in neutral

5216 Views 41 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  shadetree
I just got my 2008 Honda 420 es and in neutral it is making a grinding, rattling noise that increases in volume with increased RPM. Runs and drives great and shifts fine which makes me believe that the transmission and Top end of the motor must be functioning properly. If anyone has any ideas of what it may be or if you have had a similar problem please help me out. Thanks :grin:grin

It could be possible but I think if that was the issue that it would also do it when in gear?
I know the one muffler clamp is broken but it only makes the noise on neutral so didint think that would be it. I know on the es model you cant shift it really rough so dont know if it would be the shift forks but it is possible...
Thanks for the input but I'm pretty sure my problem is coming from the actual engine. It Is also doing it when given throttle in reverse, first and second but not when idling in gear... never had a problem like this.
Ok so what do you believe the issue could be?
I might have to, have the manual but hate to take a perfectly running and driving motor apart for a noise. Oil has not been change in a while so might try some new oil and a filter first. What type do you guys recommend for a 420 rancher?
Only thing I would be worried about is taking it a part and putting it back together wrong. I have rebuilt 4 stroke dirt bike motors in the past but this looks totally different. Might start tearing into it today then and know what the problem is for sure.

Here is a video of the noise. Anyone have an idea where I should start looking I'm thinking the timing chain...
Checked my valve clearances today and they were very loose, used your method and adjusted them. Just got this atv and dont know the history so hoping to valve adjustment will help. Starting it up tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. If it's no better will be checking out the clutch side of the motor. Thanks for the help guys:grin
Also does anyone know how to reset the change oil message that comes up. Changed the oil and filter too so would like to get the message off of the screen. Thanks
Oh ok thanks alot for some reason I could not find that. :grin
So adjusted my valves and noise is about the same so time to start taking the clutch side apart!!! Oil change on Display is off now. Lol have to drain it again
Yes, it has about 6000km and I'm sure the cam chain has never been touched, might be time for a top end too. Can you buy a clutch cover gasket or do you just use Honda bond? Thanks
Looked at the manual and it said to use a gasket maker, sealant. Also looked at a parts diagram and dont see a gasket available so is it just gasket maker then? Thanks
Looks like there is no gasket but I'm sure this things been pulled apart before. Lol about to pull the clutch cover off so hopefully I see a stretched timing chain!!! :grin

i'm sure you will !..lol.
Looks like I found the problem, but is the tensioner also bad? I included a video and it looks like it is moving it and out a little. It is just because it is maxed out? Here's a video. Thanks alot

i'm sure you will !..lol.

yep..chain is shot, and tensioner is not looking good either, replace both of them. oh, please dont crank it over like your doing without oil in the engine !..lol.
Alright looks like I will be buying a OEM tensioner and chain then. So you think that's what's causing the ticking it sure seems like it and I know not to turn it over without oil but just got too excited that I found the problem. Lol
matter of fact, after you install the new chain, and tensioner , go back and re-adjust the valves :).

Oh, I adjusted those valves perfectly. But will for sure check them again after.Lol, looks like I need a clutch puller too and some Honda bond. Is that it or do you recommend anything else well I have it apart. Will obviously check all the clutch disk clearances as well. Thanks :grin:grin
Ok great ordering the parts now so will be updating you guys when they come in, and are installed in about 2 weeks!!!:grin:grin:|:grin

good deal, yes..please keep this thread updated for future owners ! ?.

Ok so here's the update, got the new Honda can chain and tensioner and installed them. The old tensioner was completely maxed out so was probably still good but I changed it out anyways. Installed the new parts, put back together used some Hondabond on the case, filled with oil, READJUSTED VALVES and started it up. No noise sounds perfect now and way smoother. THANKS A LOT EVERYONE for the help.
