I just got my 2008 Honda 420 es and in neutral it is making a grinding, rattling noise that increases in volume with increased RPM. Runs and drives great and shifts fine which makes me believe that the transmission and Top end of the motor must be functioning properly. If anyone has any ideas of what it may be or if you have had a similar problem please help me out. Thanks :grin:grin

Hmmm. I had to replace shift forks in an 08 that was doing that. It still ran and drove, but just made a horrible noise.

That was on a footshift bike, driven by a kid who was rough on shifting. On an ES machine I have a hard time thinking that would be your issue.

Have you checked your muffler clamps to make sure one hasn't rusted through allowing it to rattle? I know it sounds silly but you'd be surprised at the noise something like that will make.

I know the one muffler clamp is broken but it only makes the noise on neutral so didint think that would be it. I know on the es model you cant shift it really rough so dont know if it would be the shift forks but it is possible...

when i got my 2000es in 08, it made strange noises. i finally figured it out. the storage box at the back was touching the frame. so i stuck a buffer there, then the noise stopped. i dont remember if it were an old sock or two, or heavy duty plastic wrap. guess i will know, when it makes noise again. :smile

instead of guess work ?, why don't you down load the service manual from the site here, and start taking it apart. I would start at the front , pull the front cover off ( drain oil first ! ), and start inspecting the clutch, shifting area, and see if anything doesn't look normal ?. if nothing there looks bad ?, you very well may have to dig deeper into the motor ?. who knows ?..until you dig in :).

I might have to, have the manual but hate to take a perfectly running and driving motor apart for a noise. Oil has not been change in a while so might try some new oil and a filter first. What type do you guys recommend for a 420 rancher?

if its that new ?, then its under warranty ?!..lol. if not ?..why worry about it ?. whats the worse that can happen, you take it apart, and can't get it back together ?..lol. don't be afraid to tear it apart !!!. you got us to help you, and the service manual, sooooooooo ??????????. it wont fix itself !. and changing the oil wont make a bit of difference to be honest. as for what oil ?. this is an open an closed case around here..same thing with winches, tires, some things are just left up to the owner :). myself ?..I run castrol full syn, 10w-30, or 10w-40, one thing you must know for a fact ?..IT MUST BE MADE FOR WET CLUTCHES !!!.

Only thing I would be worried about is taking it a part and putting it back together wrong. I have rebuilt 4 stroke dirt bike motors in the past but this looks totally different. Might start tearing into it today then and know what the problem is for sure.

Here is a video of the noise. Anyone have an idea where I should start looking I'm thinking the timing chain...
very well could be the cam chain. loose valves, someone been in the front cover already ?, I see a lot of yamahabond sticking between the front cover and engine case...lol. crank it up, take a long screw driver, put the end all over the engine, starting at the front cover, put your ear on the handle, listen, sound loud ?, move to the top, at the rocker box, same thing. I say start with checking the valves. there is a great sticky in the repair section by me explaining how to set and adjust valves on all 4-strokes ( my method ), very good info, you should read it :).

Checked my valve clearances today and they were very loose, used your method and adjusted them. Just got this atv and dont know the history so hoping to valve adjustment will help. Starting it up tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. If it's no better will be checking out the clutch side of the motor. Thanks for the help guys:grin

Also does anyone know how to reset the change oil message that comes up. Changed the oil and filter too so would like to get the message off of the screen. Thanks
I can only tell you about a 2014 Rancher but I hope the procedure for yours in similar.

Press and hold the mode select button and turn the ignition switch ON.
The maintenance indicator will appear and flash twice. After the two flashes, release the mode select button.

Wait, just found instructions for the 2008:
Press and HOLD the Select Button
Turn ignition ON
Continue to hold the Select Button until the oil change message disappears
Release Select Button
Turn ignition Off then back On.
Message should be gone.

I hope this helps you.
