I would say the one-way bearing in the starter clutch is bad.

Starter clutch , (one way bearing) has gone out about a $100 to fix if you do your own work.

How can you tell if it's the teeth or the clutch for sure. I dint want to take it to the shop costs to much.
You'll have to tear it down and look, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the teeth. It will be the one-way starter clutch.

im having the exact same issue. bought a new starter and nothing... i will tear down this weekend. just not sure which one is the one way bearing exactly.. can anyone be more specific? thanks
remove the flywheel..its one the backside of the flywheel. it's in between the big flywheel gear and flywheel..i don't know if you can just pull the big gear off ?..and just pull the one-way bearing out ?..or you may need to remove the torx bolts to get it out of the flywheel ?.

and your flywheel is on the left hand side behind the case cover..most of them are anyway.

The electric start 450's are well known to have starter clutch issues. Honda was replacing them free of charge for a while. As somebody else said, it's about $100 or so for parts, and I strongly recommend replacing the whole assembly, not just the one way bearing.

shadetree- thanks for the info! i def needed that.. will i be able to just tell that there is something wrong with that bearing? like missing/broken teeth etc?

dbell1- for some reason i cant see that picture.. anyway you can email me a link to it? [email protected]

thanks for the help guys!
the one-way bearing does not have teeth..it has lobes..they are ablong..no teeth..they free ride around the big starter gear and flywheel..most times..when they go bad...or cause problems..they make what i call chatter marks on the big starter gear..when this happends..you have to replace the starter gear also.

The one-way starter clutch isn't bolted to the back of the flywheel on the 450ER, it's located on the right side of the engine, behind the primary drive gear. It's a completely different setup than most ATVs have.

Here's what the starter clutch assembly looks like.

And here is what it looks like disassembled.
