Hey guys, just pick up this Rincon last night. It runs great, shifts good and is pretty tight except one wheel bearing. But it doesn’t know how fast I’m going! Hopefully around 60! (Topped it out while ago) lol. But anyway, display shows 0 mph no matter what, which affects the auto setting on the transmission (stays in 1st). I know it has 2 speed sensors, does the symptoms point to either one? Wasn’t for sure

Any error codes blinking? Normally the 4wd light will blink a number of times, which is the speed sensor error codes.

If not, I'd check the plugs on the front diff and check where they plug into the main wiring harness, which is in the left front wheel well on most Hondas made around that time with the Traxloc.

electric shift ?, if so ?, there might be 3 speed sensors on it, two at the front, one at the rear output shaft. check all the connections at the sensors.

oh..is it just me , or do I detect your atvs as a leaning class from us ?..lol. what I mean is, you bring up a thread up every other day or so with a new atv you get, that seems to be broken, and then ya hurry up to get on here to ask us whats wrong with it ?..lol. just a hint : try reading the service manuals first, THEN WHEN YA GET STUMPED ?, ASK AWAY !..LOL. it's cool though...I like seeing you learn this stuff !!!!, I see myself in your shoes back 25 plus years :).

We all started out like that. I was over on the Hondaforman.com board and Rich450ES walked me through everything from wheel bearings to a full engine rebuild.
then why do you need my help in putting those old trx350 engines back together ??..lol. but yeah..your 100% right..we all started out the same way. i'll give the guy credit...at least he's persistent !..lol.

Haha, you got that right shadetree, yall are the reason I am able to do this as a means of living rather than work a 9-5 job. Thank you!!!
And I hope one of these days I’ll be like one of y’all, helping out the newbie.
I’ve got the manuals to most of these bikes, but it’s so easy to just type it up and ask right quick. I’ve always thought an opinion from an expert is better than any book.

On a side note, I just ordered all new plastics for this Rincon, it’s an 05 but I went to the 09 parts and ordered the awesome and kinda rare blue color. Crazy thing is, the blue is the cheapest color also, so win win.

Gonna look different!!

Alright, finally had a chance to get working on this Rincon. Got all the plastics off and have been messing with the speed sensors. I stole one off a parts Foreman (no idea wether or not it’s good) and have switched the 3 sensors around with every possible combination. None has worked, checked the wiring harnesses per the manual and it’s good. Any ideas? I’m kinda stumped except to the fact of buying new sensors.

You get the factory service manual downloaded?

Look on page 14-24 at error codes 11-1 and 12-1.

Sounds to me like a bad VSS, but the manual should tell you how to check the ones you have before you go ordering new parts.

Thanks for the reply jeep! Yeah I’ve got the manual, the way it shows to check the sensors included some sort of special connector. I did check the harnesses though according to the manual and their good so that must leave me with bad sensors. My question though is, which sensor is the dominant one? I figured one of the 2 sensors is still good which is why I swapped them around a couple times. Or am I wrong, and that both must be working to the computer for it to display the mph?

The rear should be for the display.

The front is there to make sure the front wheels are turning at the same speed as the rear when the actuator engages. Otherwise if you're in a hole with the rear wheels spinning at 40MPH and the front tires sitting still, the actuator engages and you get a BOOM.

So the actuator won't engage until the speed sensors show the same reading.

Boom, the sensor out of the 09 worked, showing the speed now. Still wouldn’t shift in auto though right. Put it in 4wd and it blinks 5 times. I busted the screen on my iPad so I can’t check the manual, but I know it’s the front sensor. Just happy I’ve got it figured out. Thanks for help!

Gear display goes blank and won’t shift out of 2nd. But I pulled the other speed sensor out of the 09 foreman and installed it and all is good. Spent most of today painting and cleaning everything, should be setting the new plastics on tomorrow and rolling it out of the shop.

The finished product.

Yep, just 2 bad sensors, it just comes down to what’s important to you really I guess. To me if I have to replace every sensor on the dang bike every 13-14 yrs it’s worth it to me. I love the power of the Rincon, smoothness of the Rubicon, and maneuverability of the Rancher AT. All 3 have many sensors, but I wouldn’t even wanna go riding if one of those 3 factors wasn’t included. Sensors make that possible = personal preference.
