My bud has 05 Honda rancher 350 it was smoking and a small tick so I put a hole new top end on it cylinder piston rings gaskets wrist pin and adjusted the valves and went to start it the rattle got real loud and at idle and when u give it a little throttle it gets a lot louder sounds like a sewing machine so I thought maybe valves are out of adjustment so I’ve tried multiple times on them and I even buried the valves to see if it gets red of the noise but it still same thing won’t go away do u guys think maybe the connecting rod is shot

other than the crank could be bad ?, my guess would be the valve seats are working out of the head, been there, done that.

did you check the top of connecting rod with the wrist pin for play before you put it back together ??. if there is play ?, then the rod is bad.

Can I see valve sets with the springs and everything together

no, you can't see the valve seats at all. what happens is, when you crank it up, when warmed up, the valve seats work their way up out of the head, and sit there and slap against the underside of the valve.

how did you check the valve seats ??..you can't tell simply by looking at them !. i'll ask you again, you said you rebuilt the top end ?, did you re-use the old head ?. but this still does not rule out a bad connecting rod ! :).

Yes I reused the old head I took the valves out and checked the seats they are in place and didn’t move

I guess your not paying attention ?..I said...you can't see them when bad ?, they won't move until the head gets warm..then once this takes place, the valve seats works their way out of the head, and sit there slapping against the under side of the valve. most times its the exhaust valve in question. unless the connecting rod is bad ?, then i'd bet my last dollar the valve seats in the head are bad, this is a factory defect !.

It makes the noise even when the motor is cold also and when it warms up the noise stays the same

well..either you got a bad connecting rod ?, or bad valve seats ?. did you mic the cylinder before you just tossed another piston in it ?. if you did ?, then you just wasted your money.

I would pull the top end back down, and re-check the wrist pin in the top of connecting rod, slide the new wrist pin in the top of rod, to where the wrist pin is flush on one side, then grab the outer end of wrist pin, lift up, push down, if any play what so ever ?, then rod is for sure bad, which means you need a new rod ?, or new crank ?. has motor ever been sunk ?, if it has ?, well..unless you split the motor, clean/flush it out the full way ?, then your wasting your time and money.
