I highly recommend you get a service manual !. those things are very odd to take apart, and if you break the magnets ?, your screwed !. what little I know of them, is the large pinion teeth come out that end. it's pressed in from that end. I have not taken one all the way down, as I did not want to waste time on messing with something that was broken beyond fixing anyway, so I just bought a good used one back then.

I got a 2002 450 , I have never taken the selector apart before , but I have read the manual front to back and seem to remember quite a few special tools needed , I remember that piece cost some where between $400-450 , I would have to agree , get a manual like Shade said , before getting into it

It worked before I took it apart. The bearing and seal kit came with a new bearing and seal for this final clutch so I'm going to try to replace them without damaging the unit. I'm trying to find the specs on the special tools and if I can, I'll just make the one on my lathe and fab the other one. They want $38 for the press driver tool alone. Not gonna pay that for something I'll most likely use once.
