Hi all.

Newbe warning!:icon_ devil:

I just picked up an 03 TRX 90 for my 10 year old. It needs a few things but I was wondering about my pull starter.
The rope stays about 10" out from proper position. I will still start but what is the usual cause?
Sorry but shop manual is on order.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums. Someone probably changed the rope and didn't wind the spring enough. As long as it's still long enough to start, I would pull the rope out and slide the handle down about 10 inches(the length that's hanging out) and tie another knot in the rope.

ADDED: Looks like, Pain and I, were typing at the same time. LOL.

if you reallyyyyyy want to fix it right..you will need to take it off..and disasemble it..be careful..that spring inside is wicked when it comes apart in your face ! ( learned this many moons ago )..lol..watch how you take it apart..so you will know how to put it back together..it's tricky..just getting the return spring back in..is a pain !..but it can be done..more than likely the end of your return spring came undone from it's hook..and they are bad about doing this..simply because the spring get's water on it..it rust, then poof..the end of it breaks off...now..if you decide to take it apart..and get the spring out..without loosing an eye...lmao..you probally will notice the very outter end hook is broken ??..do not try to bend it back with pliers..it will just break on you..they are heat treated so to speak..what you need to do is..take the spring over to your stove..heat the outside hook end up until it glows a nice dark red..then..and only then..bend it back the the right shape..it may take a couple times until you get the right angle..but it will work..after that..hook it back inside the coil area..very carefully wind it back inside the center ( make sure your winding it the right direcction )..after that..run your rope through the outter case..to your plastic or metal wheel..( i think those had the metal winding rope wheel ? )..put it back through the hole..tie a knott in it..pull it tight so you know it will hold..now..drop the rope wheel down onto the center shaft..wind it alittle..see if your going the right way..if so..pull all the rope inside the case hole thats next to your rope wheel..there is a knotch on the rope's outter wheel..hold the rope in that..and wind your wheel around a few times..after that..pull your rope back through the outter case until all the slack is out of the case..then let go of the wheel..if you done it right..it should pull all the rope back into the pull start case..good luck

lol..thats too easy..how is he ever gonna learn about the inside of it by shortning the rope ??..lmao.
If it's still working OK, I would just shorten it and worry about learning how to work on it the next time the rope breaks. LOL.

good point !..just one problem..if the rope is too short to begin with..he may not have enough rope to get it started..then again..he may have enough rope.

im just saying, if its really not broke, dont fix it, if it works, leave it be, you can always put a new rope on

Thanks all

Wow.
That's a lot of quick responses. Thanks to all.

Looks like I found the right forum!

I know I can pull it and start it, the test will be when my 10 year old (it's a surprise for him) can start it.

Will go from there.

Thanks.

My son had to learn to start his on his own when he was 8. I'd tell him if he couldn't get it started he couldn't ride. He had to learn when to choke and when not to. He will have days when it won't want to start for him but if he wants to ride he will get it started. But you will have to one day replace the pull rope. When you do where the rope goes into the pull start housing make sure you round over any sharp edges that have been made from the wearing of the rope or you will be replacing the rope again very soon. I had to learn that lesson the hard way LMAO!
