As title states just got a 400ex and there are aluminum shavings in the oil, what's the most likely part getting destroyed?

Welcome to the forums! We try to keep this forum family friendly. And even though you did star out some of the word we all know what it meant. I edited it accordingly. If there is metal in the oil something is wearing abnormally. And the list of possibilities goes on and on. You will have to start removing parts of the engine to look for the culprit. Start by removing the valve cover and hopefully its just a rocker arm or cam. Sometimes clutch wear can put kind of a grey sludge with a shimmer to it in the oil. You are getting actual metal chunks correct?

:grin
He said aluminum...... cam and rockers are steel

Your clutch basket and fibers are probably beyond needing replacement .
Don't forget to remove the oil line from the bottom of the tank and the remove the fitting, there is a screen there too. Also behind the clutch side cover is an engine filter screen that is probably just as bad. The oil cooler would require flushing out as well.

Good luck and keep us posted

I am well aware of what materials things are made of. But if i had a dollar everytime someone said i have aluminum shavings in my oil and i asked did you try a magnet? They said no. And low and behold the magnet dosnt lie. 99.9% of the time metal in these engines oil isnt going to be aluminum.
You should build more engines grasshopper... hahaha... that's mostly aluminum. I wanna see the clutch basket. Most of the time steel shavings are gear material and yes rocker and cam.... but the majority is aluminum in that filter.
