OK I've got my rebuilt engine all put together and installed, hooked up the battery to see what happens. The shift motor works perfectly shifts through all the forward gears and reverse. Now in all the forward gears the display correctly indicates the right gears(1-5). But in neutral and reverse the indicator lights do not come on. Also in neutral and reverse the gear indicator just indicates a dashed line.
Now if I manually upshift the lever just a little bit I can get the lights to come on and the indicator will show N or R like its supposed to. Then of course the engine will crank. So everything seems to point to the angle sensor or the gear position switch in the rear crankcase cover. I could probably start the engine by fiddling with the manual lever but something still isn't right. Anyone have any ideas?

Welcome to the forums. I would guess the angle sensor, but I'm not too familiar with the ES models. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

other than what i've seen on here..i'm not much help on es models myself..but..did you pre-load the angle sensor ?..that seems to be needed to be done before it's re-stalled from what i've learned on here..good luck !

I don't think you're supposed to preload the angle sensor. I installed it like the service manual said, all you do is line it up right and bolt it on. Anyways I got the thing running, sometimes the lights will come on and sometimes not. It runs good though and shifts perfectly, so I'm just going to run it and see what happens.

Yeah, I've replaced angle sensors before and they just bolt on.

Hmmm but it seems if it was the angle sensor it wouldn't shift very good or not shift at all. It shifts fine just sometimes in neutral and reverse the indicator lights will not come on and the the gear position will indicate ----. It can't be the display because if I move the manual shifter a bit everything will work. I almost think the gear position switch has a bad spot in it or something.
