Hi this is my first post on the forums. I bought my first Honda last week for 800 bucks. It didn't run or roll for that matter. But I fixed the running issues and it now rolls freely. Just having shifting issues. The gear position will flash constantly it will go into gear with manual shifter I can get it to third gear. And when going to fourth it doesn't quite go in all the way. And I can shift it back down to neutral and into reverse. I put new angle sensor from Honda in it the motor seems okay jumps 12v to it after pulling it out to see if the motor turns. Cleand all connectors and nothing when you hit the buttons. I should mention the battery is fried. I was running a battery charger on it while doing this. I'm going to get a new battery tomorrow. I read somewhere a bad shift plate or shift drum possibly. I haven't tested the switch but I figured I should try a good battery first. To eliminate bad voltage. Any help would be great. Thank you

Had similar issue. 2002 es. You may have a broken wire to the reverse sensor which is at the back of the engine case at lower frame level. I added a bracket to keep snow from jamming in there in the winter. Problem went away.

Okay problem solved. On my rig battery fixed the issue. Thank you for the replys. No onto another issue the girl has the same atv I do and to put it in reverse you have to shift into 1 back N and the R befor it will go in and sometimes it takes a couple try's. One time we had it not downshift at all you could shift up but not down. I had to manually shift it down. Haven't had that issue but once. Any idea

I second that recommendation!

Both bikes will need the shift motors serviced regularly so may as well do them both right away! Only thing I would change in that tutorial is... if you live/operate your ATV in the far north (I see daytime highs of -35 degrees F here during winter sometimes) regions, you'll need a good brand of synthetic grease that is rated to a minimum of -40 degrees F on the low end and 300-400 degrees F on the high end. White Lithium Grease becomes a SOLID many days/nights during the winter time here!

EDIT:

Thanks for following up to let us know how you fixed your bike! Very much appreciated!

Okay I read that post very informative. Thank you for the fast replys. I will pull the covers off and clean out the gummy stuff in there and put in the all weather grease. I'm sorry I didn't see it before. Still new to hondas. Thanks again all
