02 4x2 TRX 350 man shift not working

Was riding around yesterday in 3rd gear,and tried to shift to 2nd. Shift lever went down, but did not pop back up,and transmission remained in 3rd. Shift lever moves up and down and will stay in either position(up or down). It does not pop back to the middle position as it should. Moving the lever does not change gears so I'm stuck in 3rd. Bike is a 2002 Rancher TRX350 manual shift. I'm a fairly competent backyard mechanic and would appreciate any info or advice. Thanks.

welcome to the forums. time to pull the front cover, and have a look at the front area where your shifting parts at on the front of the shift drum. lower right side when facing the motor from the front. a service manual would be nice to have, and take lots of pics when tearing it down.

meh, service manual is a service manual, some are better than others, one period is better than none !..lol. yep, my money says your problem is at the front of the engine behind the front cover, return spring ?, ratchet paws ?, any of these there will cause a problem. yes, ignore where the shifting shaft comes out, this is not the problem..yet !..lol. you can down load a free service manual from our site here

some stand them up..some don't. I don't, spec if you forget to turn the fuel off !..lmfao. I can't remember if there is a gasket on the front cover ?, if so ?, you prob will need to have a new gasket on hand..JUST IN CASE !..lol. yep, my money says your prob is behind the front cover, if not ?, then..well..its a deeper problem...inside the motor..but I doubt it..for now
